The Augustine Literacy Project® of the Triangle trains and supports volunteer tutors who provide free, one-to-one instruction in reading, writing and spelling to low-income children in our area: Durham, Orange, Wake, and Chatham counties. Our programs are based on the Orton-Gillingham approach: multisensory, direct, explicit, structured, and sequential phonics instruction.

We now have two training models!

Read the descriptions below to choose the program that works best for you. See the registration form for current dates and make your selection there.

NEW! Early Intervention Program Training:

  • One-day training, plus a one-hour review session before tutoring begins

  • Tutor a kindergartner or first grader

  • Materials developed by the ALP-T and other sources, clear instructions

  • Minimal lesson planning required

  • Assessments that test for what we teach and are easy to administer

  • Lessons are 35-40 minutes, twice a week

  • Complete the curriculum in 36-50 lessons

  • Experience teaching a nonreader to read and spell for the first time

  • After completion, option to start over with a new K-1 student

  • Focus on phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, handwriting, listening comprehension, beginning decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling)

  • Ongoing support provided as needed

  • Training fee: TBD ($200 max)

Standard Augustine Training:

  • 5-day training

  • Augustine coach accompanies new tutor for first two sessions with student

  • Wilson Reading System materials and ALP-T materials

  • Tutor a child in grade 2 or 3

  • Lessons are 45-60 minutes, twice a week

  • Commit to teach at least 60 lessons

  • Option to continue tutoring the same child for several years, or until the child is reading on grade level. The Wilson program is a complete phonics program.

  • Focus on phonics, decoding and encoding (beginning through advanced), spelling rules and syllable types, sight words, handwriting, vocabulary, controlled story reading and comprehension

  • Ongoing support provided as needed, booster sessions for advanced steps

  • Training fee: $300 for those who agree to tutor a qualified, local Augustine student for 60 lessons. If space permits, individuals who will not tutor a local Augustine student may register for $650. Payment is due at time of registration and refundable up to 2 weeks before the first day of training.
