The Augustine Literacy Project® of the Triangle trains and supports volunteer tutors who provide free, one-to-one instruction in reading, writing and spelling to low-income children in our area: Durham, Orange, Wake, and Chatham counties. Tutors receive training in a systematic, multi-sensory, phonetic approach to reading and written language, and will prepare and deliver practice lessons with the guidance of an experienced tutor/coach during the training.
An Augustine tutor agrees to meet with her/his student for 45-60 minutes twice weekly. We require new tutors to fulfill their commitment to teach 60 lessons, which may take 18 months.
The cost of the training is $300 for those who agree to tutor a qualified, local Augustine Literacy Project student. This fee helps to offset the cost of materials that become the property of the trainee plus a required background check. If space permits, individuals who will not tutor a local Augustine student may register for $650. Payment is due at the time of registration and refundable up to two weeks before the first day of training. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for information.
