The Augustine Project
Replication Policy for New Chapters
- The chapter shall adopt the name, mission statement and logo of the original Augustine Project based at Holy Family
Episcopal Church in Chapel Hill, NC (hereinafter "AP").
- The prospective leader of a chapter must complete the 70 hour Orton-Gillingham training course offered by AP or an
equivalent Orton-Gillingham training course approved by the AP director in consultation with the board.
- The prospective leader of a chapter must tutor an Augustine child for the normal period of 60 sessions and be observed
during such period by the AP director or an AP designee.
- The AP board must approve the replication based on the recommendation of the AP director. Prior to approval, the
board may request an interview with the prospective chapter leader and a review of the tutor training / monitoring
plan.
- To ensure consistency of training methodology, the director or another representative of the chapter shall be expected
to attend / observe an AP tutor training in Durham or Chapel Hill at least every three years. Chapter directors may be
invited to serve as supervisors at AP trainings.
- Any significant materials changes (assessment instruments or lesson planning materials, for example) must be approved
by the AP director in consultation with the board.
- The training offered by the chapter must include at least a 5 day practicum with a 3 to 1 trainee to supervisor
ratio.
- It is our preference that the chapter be affiliated with a faith community.
- The chapter must operate as a not-for-profit organization with tutors serving Augustine children in a volunteer
capacity.
- Within 2 years of the chapter's initial training, a governing body shall be established and bylaws drafted. The
by-laws shall be submitted to the AP for approval prior to adoption by the chapter.
- The chapter shall submit to the AP director an annual report including: the number of tutors trained that year; the
total number of students being served by the chapter; the number of schools using Augustine tutors; test scores indicating
student achievement in phonological awareness, word attack, spelling, and reading; and three major goals for the coming
year.
